The footbridge on the Vistula River
We had some time left before the New Year's Eve show, so we went for a walk to Powiśle, and our destination was the newly built footbridge over the Vistula river.
A gray, wet day and the annoying cold did not stop us from going to this attraction.
Vistula Footbridge in Warsaw - a pedestrian and bicycle footbridge over the Vistula in Warsaw, connecting Powiśle with Old Praga.
Every investment decision is controversial and causes social discussions.
"When choosing the location, two concepts were taken into account primarily: at the height of Karowa Street or at the height of Ratuszowa Street. Ultimately, the first one was chosen. This is another concept for locating the Vistula crossing in this place - in the 1920s, a decision was made to build a 1.5-kilometer bridge over the Vistula on the axis of Karowa Street. In the spring of 1937, a competition for its design was decided, which was won by the Zieleniewski and Fitzner-Gamper company from Krakow. The six-span bridge was to be supported by 5 pillars and intended for tram, vehicle and pedestrian traffic. The assumed width of the roadway was 17 meters, and the sidewalks 5 meters. The patron of the bridge was to be Marshal Józef Piłsudski.
In February 1945 (towards the end of World War II), Red Army sappers built a temporary wooden sapper bridge in the place of the current footbridge. It had 23 spans 6.5 meters wide and was equipped with 1.5-meter-wide sidewalks for pedestrians.
The current Warsaw pedestrian and bicycle footbridge is the longest of its kind in the country and one of the largest in Europe. On a Polish scale, it has a record length of 452 meters.”
In addition to its communication function, the footbridge has scenic values. On one side, the National Stadium, and on the other, the Old Town.
Today, these values have been limited for us, because the day was exceptionally gloomy, so the photos are simply gray.
