Water Festival

Finally, something going on in our Kampot:

“Bon Om Touk or the Cambodian Water Festival, is a Cambodian festival celebrated in November and marks a reversal of the flow of the Tonle Sap River. Every town and province joins in with the festival but the biggest celebrations take place in Phnom Penh with boat racing along the Sisowath Quay. For three days, workers from every province join with the city's residents to celebrate by night and day. The festival lasts for three days, and commemorates the end of the country's rainy season, as well as the reversal of flow of the Tonle Sap River. It includes boat races and concerts, and attracts several million people each year”.

This year it falls on November 21 – 23rd. Those are days off from work. There have not been too many working days since we arrived here ...

Kampot, lying on a beautiful river does not want to lose tourists to Phnom Penh and therefore organizes the Water Festival a week earlier – this year November 16, on Thursday.

Crowds of visitors from the provinces gather on the river bank to cheer on their settlements in races. Unfortunately, the lack of information on the festival program did not allow us to wait on the river bank for sporting events, so we only saw a lot of people and boats with settlements waiting for something. But for what, nobody could tell us exactly. But it is nice and festive anyway.

And some fireworks in the evening. Modest but good enough for what can be afforded. In front of our door and balcony, though!
