Washington Square
One of the places with a long history full of dramatic events, and now a bright and cheerful recreation place is the Washington Square Park.
Its central point is the Washington Square.
At the centre of the square there are two main attractions: a large fountain and the Washington Arch - commemorating the centennial of Washington's inauguration as president of the United States.
The Washington Square Park has served various roles for its community throughout the years, adapting to meet its needs.
It used to be: a marsh, a cemetery, a nameless burial ground, a public gallows and execution ground.
And now it is: a parade ground, a gathering spot for avant-garde artists, a recreational ground for New York University students, a battleground for chess enthusiasts, a playground for canines and children.
