Queens - the borough where we are staying
We accept the invitation of Ani's - professor of sociology (an Argentinian naturalized in the USA) and Steve - professor of geology (New Yorker with blood and bones) and accomodate ourselves in the guest room of their apartment in Queens. A thirty-minute express subway ride from downtown Manhattan.
We spend a lot of time in the New York subway going to various boroughs in Manhattan and beyond. This allows us to wtch the passengers watch and reflect on the phenomenon of this cosmopolitan city. Who they are, where they are from, why they are here and who they really feel they are. Yes, yes. In the subway the newcomers outnumber the locals - mostly Latinos and Asians.
I remember once in the subway everyone used to read, today they click on the mobiles or quite loudly talk with one anothet in all the languages of the world. Undoubtfully a sign of the times.
Our hosts Ani and Steve, besides their work at the university of New York, have their passions. Steve composes and plays the piano. He does it great. He regrets that he gives too little time to the and his compositions are recorded. Ani's passion is reading and getting to know people. We are a part of her passion. Ha!
