Lovers from Kamienna Street

Sings: Sława Przybylska

The music was composed by Wojciech Solarz to a text by Agnieszka Osiecka. The piece was written while the author was studying at the Łódź Film School.

Their eyes are blue and grey,
Two złoty coins in their pockets for cinema,
They live on bread and beer,
Their hands freeze in winter:

Lovers from Kamienna Street
They don't give rings or flowers.
Lovers from Kamienna Street
They don't know Shakespeare at all.
Lovers from Kamienna Street.

In the evenings on the stairs and in the doorways,
Chapped hands touch,
They sometimes last like this until morning,
Their dresses are old and crumpled.
Lovers from Kamienna Street
They travel by tram.
Lovers from Kamienna Street
They are afraid of the cop and the janitor.
Lovers from Kamienna Street.
Until one day they take torches,
They set off in procession, ugly and hungry.

We want Romeo - the girls scream

We will not return to Kamienna.

We want Juliet - the boys shout
Give us Juliet, you thugs, you rascals
They go and make a noise, they go and shout
A rag cupid flows down the street
Then again it is quiet,
Then again it is dark,
Then they return to Kamienna again.
