Finikia settlements

Half a kilometer from our hotel begins a settlement called FINIKA, which operated when the world was completely uninterested in the island of Santorini.

Brave farmers cultivated the thankless soil by growing vines and serving wealthy sea captains who had their summer homes here during the heyday of the Greek fleet.

Today's Finikia after revitalisation to meet touristic needs:

The name Finikia roughly translates to "palm tree on a rock".

More from the "Santorini Villages" platform:

Finikia

(…) It overlooks green vineyards and the neighboring islands. From Finikia you can explore the appealing beaches of the northeast coast, like Baxedes and Paradisos.

The architecture of the traditional houses will transfer you to a past era but many houses have been beautifully restored as well. Contrary to the architecture of Oia, where the houses are built on the caldera owing a wild beauty, the houses in Finikia are in harmony and consist of delightful yards, stairs and interesting facades. As you enter the village there is an impressive, big stone wall made of black volcanic rocks. (…)

Finikia is a small, quiet settlement with picturesque streets and buildings and only a few minutes away from the breathtaking Oia village.

Farmers that worked in the valley and vineyards lived here, as well as sea captains who had their summer homes and canavas in Finikia. The village experienced its dark period from the early 20th century, where more than 150 canavas were deserted because of war sand the devastating earthquake of 1956.
